By the end of the nineteenth
century, the old diocese of Worcester was too large to
be effective and it was decided to make St. Philips
into the seat of the bishop of the new diocese of
Birmingham: hence, Birmingham Cathedral.
- Charles Gore (then Bishop of
Worcester) became the first Bishop of Birmingham
in 1905.
- Designed by Thomas Archer and
built between 1709 and 1715,
- Rare example of the 'English
Baroque' style
- Italianate domed tower
- Originally the parish church of
the 'New Town', as the city began to expand
- Four stained glass windows
(1885-97) by Edward Burne-Jones and William
Morris, depicting The Birth of Christ, His
Crucifixion, His Ascension, and the Last Judgement.
